The history of the internet since it has become a widespread tool for the public is not a particularly long one. What many may not realize is that web design has undergone a few dramatic shifts as private and professional technology has advanced. This all began with the implementation of HTML with the very first public web browser, Mosaic.

The first generation of HTML gave designers limited options for colors and graphics. Websites were more writing documents that could be shared with the world, but each incarnation of HTML gave the designers slightly (more…)

What Should Good Web Design Do?

Tagged with Uncategorized on 7th January, 2013. No comments.

There’s no denying the impact of a first impression.

Whether it’s meeting a future employee, prospective date or finding a new home, that first impression comes along only once. The same can be said for what your Web site says on first impact.

It’s not always about flash, animation or stellar illustrations. But there are things good site design should have:

1. Balance

Is it easy to determine what the page’s dominant element is? If not, consider cropping an element larger, or one smaller. A balanced page should have a dominant element; supporting elements are important, and will radiate from this impactful center. Don’t create a competition for attention.M

2. Two-Utility

Flash animation, cutting-edge fonts and superb graphics mean nothing if the links don’t work. It’s all about the click. Visitors must first be able to identify where to click, then must be taken there, and quickly. Pretty design might win awards; functional design will win readers and customers.

3. Space

Resist the urge to cram it all into your landing page. Give your data and details some room to breathe. Let your text boxes stand alone in space; as a rule, don’t place a text box next to another one. In the box, consider adding leading – the space between lines – to your text to increase readability.

You should review other sites, as well as keep a critical eye for your own. Also, take a minute for a clear wireless internet review.

Designing with Adobe Creative Suite

Hi Everyone! I feel like it’s been a year since I’ve been able to post on here. In actuality, it’s been closer to a month or two, but I’ve still noticed the gap. In any case, I’m sorry it’s been so long, and I’m happy to be back once again.

Now that I am back, we should return to the basics. There are lots of great Web design programs out there – many of which I hope to feature on here at some point. However, even with so many new and unique program, it is sometimes a good idea to simply trust the industry leaders.

The Adobe Creative Suite has been one of the leaders in print and Web design for years. With a full line of software that takes you from initial graphic design (Photoshop), all the way to the creation of a fully functional website (Dreamweaver). Of course, those are pretty much the bare minimum. The other products in the suite are what really make a Web site pop.

One downside of the Adobe Suite is that each program is relatively expensive. While schools and businesses may be able to afford the software, some individuals or freelancers may not have the necessary means to purchase the proper programs.

Even so, it is great software, and if you’re looking for a good way to design some beautiful Web sites, this is a great place to start.
